Sharon Sexton was named the Assistant Director of Physical Education and Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator at Lewis & Clark in July of 2007 and was promoted to Associate Director/Senior Woman Administrator in July of 2008.
In her current role, Sexton manages day to day department internal operations, including NCAA compliance for the Pioneers 19 varsity athletic teams and coordination of the employment of department personnel. She is also directly responsible for contracts, travel, activity class curriculum, student employment, the end of the year Student-Athlete Dessert and Awards Ceremony and serves as advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC). At the Northwest Conference level, she serves as the administrative liaison for the Men's & Women's Golf Coaches.
Prior to Lewis & Clark, Sexton spent eight years at Otterbein College, a Division III institution in Westerville, Ohio, where she served as the Head Women's Volleyball and Head Women's Golf Coach as well as an instructor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences.
Successful, on both the volleyball court and the golf course at Otterbein, Sexton is still ranked in the top ten among present and former volleyball coaches in the Ohio Athletic Conference in win percentage. Five athletes, who played under Sexton, hold 10 separate OAC season, or career-records. Her teams continually found success in the classroom, where they were recognized for seven consecutive years by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as Team Academic Award Winners. Sexton also coached the first volleyball Academic All-American and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship winner at Otterbein during her tenure.
When hired in 1999, Sexton was given the responsibility of starting the women's golf program. Building the program from scratch, her teams won 43 team and 29 individual championships including four straight OAC titles (2003-2006). She was also a four-time OAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year selection, earning the honor in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Sexton spent two years as an assistant volleyball coach at NCAA Division II Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio before taking the position at Otterbein. At Ashland she was involved in all aspects of the volleyball program. During her stint as an assistant at Ashland University, Sexton completed her Master's Degree in Education in 1999.
Sexton was a student-athlete at NCAA Division I St. Bonaventure University, a member of the Atlantic Ten Conference, located in Olean, New York. A four-year letter-winner and team captain of the volleyball team, she competed at both the middle and outside hitter positions. Sexton completed her undergraduate education in 1996 with dual degrees in English and Spanish and a minor in Psychology.
A native of Centerville, Massachusetts, Sexton was a three sport varsity athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball in high school and was a member of one of the first classes to be inducted into the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame in November, 2008.
