PORTLAND, Ore. – After a second-place finish in the final dual meet before Conference Championships, sophomore women’s swimmer Heather Markham has been selected this week’s Lewis & Clark Featured Student-Athlete of the Week.
In a dual meet at Pacific (Ore.) this last weekend, Markham
placed second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:24.09.
“Heather is a marvelous swimmer to coach,” said head coach Chris Fantz. “I feel like she’s always willing to push herself harder in training with no complaint. She also focuses on technique and tries to sharpen her strokes in workouts, whether we ask her to or not.”
The International Affairs and Pre-Med major plans to attend medical school and work in a program such as Doctors Without Borders upon graduating from L&C.
She also plays the harp, studying not only in private lessons but as a part of the Lewis & Clark orchestra and community orchestras. In addition to swimming, she enjoys physical activities such as skiing in the winter and motorcycling in the summer.
“Heather takes on a solid course load and juggles a lot of interests. I’ve been so impressed by the way she bought into the swimming program and keeps looking forward. She’s a team player to the max,” said Fantz.
The Lewis & Clark athletics department will name a Featured Student-Athlete of the Week each Thursday based on performances in competition as well as in the classroom.
