PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore track & field athlete Matt DeRosa has been selected this week’s Lewis & Clark Featured Student-Athlete of the Week.
This past weekend at the Pacific Preview, DeRosa set personal bests in all three throwing events. He earned third place in the discus with a throw of 125-9 meters, placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13-8m, and seventh in the hammer with a distance of 39-68m.
“Matt has a wonderful attitude toward life,” said head coach Keith Woodard. “It is great to watch his big improvements in all three of his throwing events, and there is more to come.”
In addition to track & field, DeRosa is a member of the Pioneer football team. He takes part in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and also serves as an RA in Copeland.
“He does an outstanding job of balancing his academics with athletics along with his RA duties,” said Woodard. “He is extremely supportive of his teammates and always volunteers to help wherever needed.”
A math major, DeRosa hopes to coach football after graduation, hopefully at the high school level.
“Coaching intercity students would be a great opportunity for me to help people get through struggles in their early years,” said DeRosa. “Recently, I have shifted to a more mathematical view on sports. I want to use differential equations to optimize athletic performance.”
The Lewis & Clark athletics department will name a Featured Student-Athlete each Thursday based on performances in competition as well as in the classroom.
