Milo McIver State Park near Estacada. Originally designed as an 18-hole golf course alongside the Clackamas River, it was obtained by the State Park Bureau after the developer abandoned it just prior to completion. The fairways, separated by trees and shrubs, now form the meadows the course utilizes. McIver has those critical elements that make up a great racing experience. The course is all grass or wood chip trails. It is challenging in its terrain with enough hills to test the runners, but not so many that the runners can't race at a fast tempo. The course is also scenic for the racers as they run through forests, meadows, and along the river bank. Spectators are an important part of the course. At McIver, spectators can view the race at several stages without moving far from the central start/finish area. Other courses may be faster because of the flat terrain and asphalt surfaces, but McIver is pure cross country-- an exciting place to complete for true cross country racers. The course is a double-loop with the start and finish in the middle. Most of the course in on grass and spikes may be worn (3/8? recommended). It is a relatively flat course with some short, rolling hills throughout the course. The course is completely marked with a painted, double line. The mile marks are both painted on the ground and marked with signs. Women’s Course --- The course is a double-loop (3,000m each loop) with the start and finish in the middle of the loops. The start is slightly uphill for the first 400m and then it turns slightly right up a 50m hill. The course then curves to the left and comes down the hill. The course proceeds flat and straight for the next 400m, parallel to a parking lot and then curves left to follow the river bank. Along the winding river bank, the course has some rolling hills but is gradually going downhill for 1,200m. The course then turns hard left and starts gradually uphill while paralleling the curving parking lot road for 1,000m back to the start/finish area. After the second loop, the course finishes with a left turn down a short hill to the finish line. |

The start is slightly uphill for the first 400m and then it turns slightly right up a 50m hill. The course then curves to the left and comes down the hill. It then starts up a series of small hills for the next 400m, turns left along the river bank and comes down the same series of small hills. The course leaves the river bank to cross an open field and rejoins the river bank again. Along the winding river bank, the course has some rolling hills but is gradu-ally going downhill for 1,200m.
