Baseball Sweeps Senior Day

The Pioneer baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against the visiting Patten Lions, winning 4-2 (box score) and 6-5 (box score). Seniors Jordon Smiley and Dan Meehan each had victories on senior day.

In game one, Jordon Smiley (senior, Las Vegas, Nevada) took the mound in his final start of his Pioneer career, leading his team to a 4-2 victory over the Lions.

After giving up a run two batters into the game, Smiley fell into a grove, allowing just two more hits through the first five innings of the game.

The Pioneer offense gave Smiley the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Shibata (senior, Pearl City, Hawaii) led off the inning with a single. A double by AJ Brown (junior, Vancouver, Wash.) scored Shibata. A second run scored on a sac fly by Chris Estrella (senior, Henderson, Nevada) to put the Pioneers up 2-1. The Pioneers added two more in the sixth inning. Roland Greene (freshman, Encinitas, Calif.) singled, scoring on a hit by Jordan Shibata. Shibata came around to score on a double by Sami Morgan (sophomore, San Mateo, Calif.), staking Smiley to a 4-1 lead.

After Smiley gave up one run in the eighth, David LaDouceur (freshman, The Dalles, Ore.) came on in the ninth inning, getting the Lions to go 1-2-3 to earn his first collegiate save. It was also LaDouceur's fourth straight appearance in which he did not allow a run.

Jordan Smiley was one of the seven Pioneers honored before the games on Senior Day. With the possibility of rain on Sunday, the Pioneers chose to honor their six seniors and one one-year Japanese exchange student before these games in good weather. Smiley came into the game eight shy of also tying for the career strikeout record. He got six strikeouts in the game, coming up two shy of the record.

In game two, Dan Meehan (senior, Lake Oswego, Ore.), a senior who pitched his first three seasons at Trinity College before transferring to L&C, picthed his first complete game of the season, holding on for a 6-5 victory over the Lions.

After Patton scored three runs in the top of the first, the Pioneers got another hit from Jordan Shibata to lead things off in the top of the first. He scored on a double play to make it 3-1.

The Pioneers sent nine batters to the plate in the second, scoring five runs. Jordan Shibata earned an RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Jordan Wlodarczyk (junior, Lake Oswego, Ore.) singled to drive in two more runs. A double by TJ Witkowski (sophomore, Tooele, Utah) and a single by Sam Holman (freshman, Eugene, Ore.) drove in another two to put the Pioneers up 6-3. The Lions scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, but Meehan held on for the 6-5 victory.

Dan Meehan, in his final game as a Pioneer, scattered six hits, allowing five runs (four earned), walking one without hitting a batter.

Jordan Shibata had a very strong senior day performance. The Pioneers' all-time career leader in hits added three more to his total, going 3-7, scoring four runs, driving in two.  Senior Chris Estrella drove in a run. Tsunehiro Ono (junior, Tokyo, Japan) capped his Pioneer career scoring a run in game two.

The Pioneers have one more game on the schedule, a single game Sunday against Oregon Tech at the Huston Sports Complex. First pitch is at 11 am. The game will be carried live on the internet through sportsjuice.com.
