Justin Baughman Resigns As Head Baseball Coach
PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark
Director of Athletics Clark Yeager has announced the resignation of
head baseball coach Justin Baughman, which became effective Jan. 1.
Baughman compiled a 37-71 record through four seasons (2006-2009),
while coaching three Northwest Conference All-Conference First-Team
players. Baughman is leaving the Pioneers to accept a position with
the San Diego Padres as their scout in the Northwest.
“Justin has been great for his players, our department, the
college, the conference and for baseball,” said Yeager.
“He is everything you want in a coach: an exceptional coach
and a great educator. We wish him all the best.”
With the support of both Baughman and the College, the position of
interim head coach has been offered to former assistant coach Eric
Deovlet, effective immediately. A national search for the position
will begin in January, with the intentions of hiring a permanent
coach by May 1st.
Deovlet has served as an assistant coach for the Pioneers for the
last four seasons (2006-2009). Deovlet brings championship
experience to the Pioneers, helping lead Chapman University (NCAA
Division II) to the 2003 National Championship and a Regional
playoff berth in 2004, working primarily with the outfielders and
hitters. A native of Southern California, Deovlet spent the summer
of 2006 coaching in the Cape Cod League where his Yarmouth-Dennis
Red Sox won the League Championship.
“Eric brings a wealth of knowledge of the game of baseball
to this position. He has the full support of our department and the
institution, as he looks to lead this season’s
team.”
The Pioneers are set to open the 2010 season on the road, with a
four-game series at Menlo beginning Feb. 19.
