TUCSON, Ariz. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team headed to Arizona for the weekend, where they are slated to play four games. In the Pioneers first game of the trip they defeated the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers 6-4, earning their first win of the 2013 season.

The Pioneers could not capitalize on runners in scoring position in the first couple innings but did break through in the third inning putting up three runs on five singles by the middle of their lineup. The Pios then added a fourth run in the top of the fourth inning on a leadoff double by freshman Bradley Lezak and a sacrifice fly by Matthew Cathcart.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Mike Hathaway held the Tigers to five hits and no runs into the fifth inning. In the sixth, Iowa Wesleyan knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly by their catcher, Ryan Daniels. They scored their second run in the seventh inning on an RBI base hit by Louis Rivera. The Tigers then scored two runs on the Pioneer bullpen with a double down the left field line by Jeffrey Burdett, which tied the game at 4-4. Pitcher Kyle Tibbett was brought in to try and slow the Tiger's attack. Tibbett did just that, recording all three outs of the inning while stranding two runners on base, including what was the go ahead run at third base.

With the momentum swinging in their direction, the Pioneers then went to work in their half of the ninth inning.  Michael Kinkenon tripled to start the ninth, putting the go ahead run on third base. Andrew Traver then walked and Eric Hyun layed down a safety squeeze that scored Kinkenon. Moments later Jake Costantino tacked on an insurance run scoring Traver on a triple down the left field line.

Tibbett pitched in the bottom of the ninth, putting down the Tigers in order, for a 6-4 Lewis & Clark victory.

Tibbett earned the win in relief, while Hathaway made a solid start for the Pios only allowing three runs in seven innings. Keith Bullock received the loss for the Tigers.

Cathcart and senior Geoff Wertz led the Pioneers with three hits apiece while Hyun came up clutch with two RBIs while also going 3-4 for Lewis & Clark. Iowa Wesleyan's Nathan Strusz had three hits on the day while Burdett went 2-4 on the day with 2 RBIs.

The Pioneers are back in action in Arizona on Saturday playing a doubleheader against Wartburg College.
