TACOMA, Wash. -- Conner Sick drove in Ben Beck on a RBI single in the fifth inning to tie Lewis & Clark's game with the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Sunday, but the Pioneers didn't move ahead before PLU scored two more runs in a 9-7 defeat at PLU Field.
Lewis & Clark was trying to get one win after losing the opening doubleheader on Saturday. The three-game loss is the first time the Pios have been swept this season.
Max Haddad, who had pitched four scoreless innings after taking over for Pioneers starter Connor Eggleston in the third, threw a wild pitch that allowed Matt Vick to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh for the Lutes. Overall, Haddad (0-1) pitched five innings, gave up three hits, two runs with one earned, two walks and two strikeouts.
Lewis & Clark (2-7; 2-4 NWC) took a 2-0 lead in the opening half inning on Cooper Larson's two-RBI single that scored Matt Donovan and Sean Shepherd, who singled and walked, respectively. Shepherd finished 3 for 4 from the plate, including a RBI double in the Pios' four-run third inning. He added a walk and a run scored. Donovan and Larson each finished with two hits.
After Shepherd's RBI double in the third, Larson hit an RBI single and Tommy Massari, who won last week's Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award, hit a two-run home run that gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead at the time.
PLU (7-2; 5-1 NWC) answered back with four in the bottom of the third. Ben Welch went 2 for 3 with a home run to lead the Lutes, Connor Cantu hit a triple and Tanner Zuber (1-0) earned the win after pitching 2 2/3 innings with one hit and a strikeout. Tanner Williams (1) earned the save.
Lewis & Clark hosts Puget Sound next weekend in a three-game series at the Huston Sports Complex. The Pios lost 10-9 to the Loggers in a non-conference game on Feb. 12.
