SPOKANE, Wash. -- Nick Lockwood had three hits in Saturday's opener and Tommy Massari had three in the finale, but the Lewis & Clark Pioneers came out winless against the Whitworth Pirates at Merkal Field. After a 5-1 loss in game one, Lewis & Clark dropped game two, 7-4.
In the opener, the Pioneers didn't allow more than one run in any inning, but only scored once themselves, leaving seven on base. Drake Gilliland pitched seven innings in defeat despite six strikeouts.
Lewis & Clark tallied 14 hits in the finale, four more than Whitworth, but fell into a 3-1 hole after the opening inning. Cooper Larson, Connor Eggleston and Ben Beck had a pair of hits apiece. In the loss, Zach Merzlak threw 4 1/3 innings as the Pioneers starter with four strikeouts in his first decision of the year.
