CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were on the road this Saturday, playing the Claremont Mudd-Scripps in California. They were unable to bring enough runners in resulting in a 14-8 loss in the first game and 6-4 loss in the second.
During the first game, the Mudd-Scripps scored first earning two runs in the third inning off of a two-run home run by Henri Levenson. The Pioneers then answered back in the top of the fourth bringing in four runs and taking the lead 4-2. Matt Donovan scored off a pitching error, Cooper Larson hit an RBI to bring in Chandler Vieira and Justin Katona hit a two-run RBI to bring in Larson and Connor Eggleston.
Then in the bottom of the fourth, Claremont answers back with four runs of their own to retake the lead 6-4, three of which coming from another home run (3 RBI) but instead by Chase Eller. The Mudd-Scripps then extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth and sixth scoring one run each inning but being down 8-4 did not stun the Pios.
At the top of the seventh Lewis & Clark brought in another four runs off of four individual RBI's to tie the game 8-8. Dominic Monozon brought in Kevin Jacobs, M. Donovan brought in D. Monozon, Vieira brought in Jacob Serafini and Sean Shepherd brought in M. Donovan.
The Pioneers then gave the Mudd-Scripps their largest lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh after making two errors and allowing six straight runs to go down 14-8. The Pios then went scoreless in the top of the ninth giving the Mudd-Scripps the first game of their doubleheader.
Lewis & Clark finished with 10 hits and six errors, and their four pitchers allowed 11 hits. The Pios also pitched 48 strikes and 101 balls out of 214 total pitches.
C. Larson and M. Donovan both had two hits with each earning an RBI.
In the second game, the Pioneers scored first in the first and third inning before the Mudd-Scripps scored their first run. The designated hitter, Connor Eggleston, hit an RBI down the left side to bring in Sean Shepherd and in his second at-bat hit another RBI down right field to bring in Jacob Serafini. Claremont answered back at the bottom of the third bringing in two runs to tie the game 2-2.
The Mudd-Scripps then scored another run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to go up 6-4. Nick Kennison was doing a great job keeping the Mudd-Scripps batters at bay for five straight innings until he was subbed out for C. Eggleston in the sixth. Kennison had four strikeouts with five hits and walked two batters.
Lewis & Clark was able to score two more runs at the top of the seventh inning but it was not enough to send the game to the bottom of the seventh.
C. Eggleston was the leading hitter for the Pioneers with three hits and four RBI's followed by Shepherd with two hits and two runs.
The Pioneers will be playing against Whittier on Sunday at 12 p.m.
