Football Falls 51-14 at Menlo

The Pioneers  fell 51-14 (boxscore) to the Menlo Oaks in Atherton Saturday afternoon. Joevonte Mayes had a 64-yard touchdown run. Chance Martinez had his first collegiate touchdown, 66-yard reception.

In the first quarter, the Oaks converted their first two possessions into touchdowns, taking an early 14-0 lead. The Pioneer defense held the Oaks when they tried to convert on a fourth-and-three, taking over possession deep in their own territory. Three plays later, the Pioneers faced a fourth-and-one at still deep in their own territory, and decided to go for it. On the next play, running back Joevonte Mayes (freshman, Milwaukie, Ore.) burst past his defenders, taking the ball all the way to the Menlo end zone for a 64-yard rushing TD to make it a 14-7 game. After holding the Oaks to a three-and -out, Chance Martinez (freshman, Clackamas, Ore.), pictured right, helped the Pioneers tie the game with a 66-yard touchdown reception and run.

Menlo added two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead into the half. In all, the Oaks scored 37 unanswered points, shutting out the Pioneers in the second half to cruise to a 51-14 victory in their homecoming game. The Pioneers' best chance at second-half points came in the third quarter on a 41-yard reception by James Connelly (junior, El Cajon, Calif.) in the end zone that was erased due to a Pioneer penalty.

For the Pioneers, AJ Brown finished the game 8-21 for 115 yards with three interceptions. He threw one touchdown. Chance Martinez led the Pioneers in receiving yards. He had one catch for 66 yards, scoring his first collegiate touchdown. Mike Wennerlind (senior, Troutdale, Ore.) had four catches for 35 yards.  Joevonte Mayes had 118 yards rushing on 19 carries.
