Football Picks Up 57-35 Homecoming Win over Crown College

PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior kicker Andrew Foote
scored 21 of the Lewis & Clark football team’s 57 points
in its homecoming victory over Crown College on Saturday afternoon
at Griswold Stadium. The Pioneers put together a well-rounded
offensive assault that saw them pick up their first victory of the
season, taking down the Storm 57-35.
The Storm, who opted to receive the ball first, grabbed an early
7-0 lead on a 15-yard reception by Callan McKinley with 8:47 in the
first quarter. The Pioneers responded seconds later, with a 46-yard
touchdown from Harrison Keller just 11 seconds after the Crown
touchdown.
Not to be outdone Crown responded with a 10 second
touchdown of its own with 8:17 left in the first quarter. The
Pioneers tied the game 14-14 with 5:44 remaining in the quarter
with a 16-yard touchdown run from Laurence.
Foote would go onto make all of his point after attempts before
kicking four field goals in the first half of action, sending the
Pioneers into the half with a 33-28 advantage.
The Pioneers carried their scoring frenzy over to the second half,
with Foote kicking things off with a field goal with 10:58 to play
in the third quarter. The Storm tried frantically to score on their
next possession, pulling off six plays for 45-yards, but were
forced to kick the ball away, courtesy of tough defense by Disan
Suarez and the Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark took full advantage of the next possession, with
a 64-yard touchdown run by freshman Logan Kotzian. Kotzian received
the ball at the Lewis & Clark 36-yard line, faking out the
Crown defense and running in for the score.
Sloppy play by the Strom on their next possession resulted in a
fumble recovery by t he Pioneers. Once again the Pioneers were able
to take care of their chances, this time with a 29-yard touchdown
reception by sophomore Shawn Evans, giving the Pioneers a 50-28
lead.
Crown was able to get on the board once more, this time with 14:06
remaining in the game. Tyler Hallblade ran the ball in for the
Storm to cut the Pioneer lead to 50-35.
The Pioneer offense wasn’t finished, scoring once more, this
time with Laurence finding Keller. The Pioneers held possession for
eight minutes on their final drive, the longest of the game,
getting off 13 plays for 64-yards.
Laurence rushed for a career-high 219-yards, while Kotzian rushed
for 107-yards on six carries. Laurence ended the day 15-of-20 with
three touchdown passes. Keller led the team in receiving yards with
79, while Evans finished with 72-yards.
Defensively Shawn Kelly, Chris Kelly and Brooks Patterson led the
Pioneers with five tackles. Freshman Aaron Lucas finished with a
quarterback sack, while Dan Curtin and Danny Lockard each broke up
passes.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon when
they hit the road to face Northwest Conference foe Menlo.
