Men's Basketball Beats Walla Walla 95-66

The #25 Pioneer men's basketball team defeated the Walla Walla Wolves 95-66 (box score)Sunday afternoon at the Pamplin Sports Center. Joey Toboni scored a game-high 18 points for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers opened the game scoring 13 points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game, including a pair of baskets by Josh Kollasch (sophomore, Tucson, Ariz.), to jump out to a 13-0 lead. The Pioneer defense kept the Wolves from hitting a field goal through the first five minutes of the game. The Wolves finally found their offensive legs, but never proved much of a challenge to the Pioneers in the first half as L&C took a 54-27 lead into the break.
The second half was much more closely contested with the Pioneers outscoring Walla Walla 41-39 in the frame en route to their 95-66 victory.
The Pioneers had five players post double-digits in the point column. Joey Toboni (senior, San Francisco, Calif.) led all scorers with 18 points. Toboni was 6-11 from the field, including hitting 3-6 three-point attempts. Tyson Papenfuss (junior, Clackamas, Ore.) scored 15 points with six rebounds. David Berggren (junior, Tualatin, Ore.) hit four three-pointers for 12 points. Josh Kollasch and Mark Robinowitz (senior, Portland, Ore.) each scored ten. Gene Rivera (senior, Kahului, Hawaii) had eight rebounds to lead the Pioneer defense. Rivera also had six points, four assists, and a block.
Brett Weisner led the Wolves with 16 points and six rebounds. Gerard Dauphin scored 12 with 7 rebounds.
With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 3-1 on the season. The Wolves fall to 3-6.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday evening, taking on their second NCAA Division I opponent of the season, the Portland State Vikings. The game is scheduled to be played at the Stott Center on the campus of PSU. A special pre-game rally will be held at the Cheerful Tortoise. $5 game tickets are available at the L&C Athletics Office.
