PORTLAND, Ore. - November is Men's Health Awareness Month, and the Lewis & Clark College men's basketball team is joining up with the Pioneer Nation to help the cause by participating in Movember.
Movember is the global men's health charity encouraging men to grow and women to support the moustache for the 30 days of November. Through the power of the moustache, awareness and funds are raised for men's health to combat prostate and testicular cancer. In the US, programs directed by the Movember Foundation are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, and research to achieve an everlasting impact on the face of men's health.
Men start on Nov. 1, clean-shaven, and grow their moustache for 30 days, getting friends, family and colleagues to donate to their Mo-growing efforts. The Pioneer Nation and the Pioneer Men's Basketball Team will encourage students and fans to grow out their moustaches throughout the month. Fans can keep up with their favorite student-athletes' staches on Facebook and Twitter and support the cause by donating on behalf of their favorite stache growers at the LC Movember Team.
Men's health issues hold a special place in the minds of Pioneer athletics, as L&C assistant swimming coach Michael Miller himself battled with prostate cancer. Today, Miller is a three-time cancer survivor and is a mainstay in the athletic department, where he continues to be an inspiration to both the student-athletes and coaching staff.
"Men need to take charge of their own health care and Movember is a great way to raise awareness," said Miller.
The Pioneer Nation will also be sponsoring a table outside of Fields Dining Hall throughout the month of Movember where students can learn more about the project, sign up and show off their moustaches to the world.
The Pioneers will be "growing and showing" their moustaches through the month of November, and ready to debut as a team at their home opener against Old Westbury on Nov. 17. The first 200 fans through the doors will receive moustaches of their own. Fans that grow their moustaches and share on social media with #LCMovember will have a chance to win some great prizes.
