PORTLAND, Ore. –- Led by senior Markel Leonard, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost their home opener, 70-45, against visiting Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night. Leonard had a team-high 11 points, going 4 of 10 on field goals and 2 of 5 on 3-pointers.
"I just have to stay aggressive all year. Coach believes in me to take open shots and create for myself and my teammates," said Leonard. "That's the biggest difference from last year. I'm in attack mode, from the jump ball all the way to the last buzzer sound. Staying that way no matter what will be a big key for me this year."
Starting at point guard, Leonard has taken on the responsibility that head coach Dinari Foreman has trusted him with, distributing offensively for his teammates.
Fellow senior Alex Jones started out the game with a 3-pointer for the Pioneers, leaving them ahead early. Unfortunately, that was the one a few leads that Lewis & Clark would hold for the night after quick points by the Stags put them up by 10 after five minutes of play in the first half.
Cannen Roberson looked to cut down the lead late in the first half, with a fastbreak drive ending in a layup, as well as a successful free-throw shot. He then continued the streak, with an assist to Kyle Owens for a 3-pointer and another good layup less than a minute later. Roberson ended the night with seven points and two rebounds, while Jones posted five points and five rebounds. Junior Jonathon Boddie also had five rebounds and five points, as well as two steals. Freshman Andrew Vickers had a game-high four steals.
Claremont M-S ended the night 28 of 44 on field goals, while the Pioneers were 14-56. Kendrick Morris and Michael Scarlett combined for combined for 36 points on 14 of 19 shooting.
"They got a lot of offensive boards and second-chance points," said Leonard. "We couldn't put any strings of stops together. They made a lot of shots and we missed a lot of shots is essentially what it comes down to."
Lewis & Clark returns to Pamplin Sports Center on Nov. 25 to take on Cal Lutheran at 5 p.m.
