PORTLAND, Ore. -- Markel Leonard started the game making two 3-pointers to go with a pair of free throws and the Lewis & Clark Pioneers went up 12-0 en route to an 84-61 victory over the Wesley Wolverines on Tuesday night.
The Pioneers held Wesley without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of the game, eventually building their lead to 27 in the second half.
"We came out really good from the gate and kept trying to pile it on them," said Cannen Roberson, who had 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting. "Our defensive intensity was really good, we were moving the ball really well and it was a good all-around effort from everybody."
Lewis & Clark nearly matched its season best from 3-point range, ending 13 for 32, or 40 percent. Against Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 2, the Pios hit 14 3-pointers, making 42 percent, in an 84-62 win.
"We all kind of feed off of each other," said Roberson. "Tonight, Markel had it going and it opened everyone else up."
In all three games that they've led at halftime, Lewis & Clark (3-7) has won.
The Pioneers host preseason top-25 Wooster on Wednesday at 4 p.m., which will be Lewis & Clark's final non-conference game. Three of the Pios' nine non-conference opponents have three losses or fewer. The entire schedule has a combined 43-39 record, with Cal Lutheran and Claremont M-S touting a 13-2 mark together. At 0-8, Caltech has the worst record of any Lewis & Clark opponent.
"[Wesley] was a really good test right here. This team is always doing very well. It is just good to come out with a win," said Roberson when asked about the tough non-conference schedule.
Wooster is 5-4 and was ranked seventh in the preseason D3hoops.com men's top 25 poll.
