Sharon Sexton Named Interim Men's and Women's Golf Coach

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College Director of Athletics Clark Yeager has announced the appointment of Associate Athletic Director of Physical Education & Athletics, Sharon Sexton, as the interim men’s and women’s golf coach. Sexton takes over for Scott Stickney, who recently announced his resignation in order to focus on family obligations.

“My commitment and intent as golf coach was to give the program 100% and with my father’s healthcare needs, I am not able to do so at this time. It has been an amazing experience at L&C and for me to be associated with student-athletes with such intellectual acumen, competitiveness and dedication. I will miss seeing my players and I know that they are going to be in very good hands going forward with Sharon,” states Stickney.

Sexton is no stranger to the golf world, having started the women’s golf program at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio while also serving as the head volleyball coach. During her 8 years as head coach with the Cardinals, Sexton led the team to four straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) titles, 43 team tournament championships and 29 individual tournament championships. Sexton was also named the OAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006, while helping the team earn a top-10 Division III ranking in 2006-07. Sexton’s 2005-2006 recruiting class was ranked # 2 in Division III according to Golfstat with 4 freshmen competing in the top 5. Active in the college golf community Sexton served as the Chair of the OAC coaches committee and as a member of the NCAA Great Lakes regional advisory committee.

A true believer in the balance of academics and athletics, Sexton’s teams were also successful in the classroom. Academically, Sexton had multiple Academic All-OAC performers, 8 separate players earn National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team accolades; as well as 4 individuals earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Team honors.

“I have really appreciated coach Stickney’s relationship with our players and understand completely his need to be more available for his father. I am also very indebted to Sharon for taking on this added responsibility. I know our teams will be in great hands,” says Yeager.

Sexton will take over the coaching and recruiting duties for both the men’s and women’s teams for the fall season, which includes organizing the Northwest Conference Fall Championship. The Pioneers are set to host the tournament on October 17th and 18th at Heron Lakes Great Blue and Greenback Golf Courses. During the fall, the department will begin a search for the Pioneer’s next golf coach who will likely take over both teams this winter.
