Pios Fall To Pirates In Men's Tennis
RESULTS

PORTLAND, ORE.-
With injuries claiming another Pio, the men continue to struggle to
keep pace with another stronger and deeper Northwest Conference
opponent. Lewis & Clark gets swept 9-0 by Whitworth.
The Pios had another tough day as their road weary legs came to
life a little too late against a strong Whitworth squad. The injury
bug continues to ravage the Pios’ lineup as international
student, Wataru Nakamura, tried valiantly to play through an ankle
injury, but ultimately had to call it quits after dropping his
first set 6-1 to Cameron Williams. Other players didn’t fare
so well either as a solid Whitworth team didn’t give up
twenty games total the entire match. All three Pioneer doubles
teams had trouble adjusting to the slower and grittier courts in
Spokane. Playing for only the second time outside all year, the men
had a hard time getting into rhythm. Junya Furakawa and Peter Ray
both started their singles matches well and were on serve before
Colin Zalewski and Michael Shelton pulled away to win 6-4, 6-1 and
6-3, 6-1 respectively.
The Pioneers stay in Spokane for the night before traveling to
Walla Walla to take on the defending champion Missionaries at a
rescheduled time of 1:00 pm.
