Pioneers' Men's Tennis Close Out Season With Positive Showing

The Pioneer men finish their 2010 season out with positive doubles results against Whitworth University but still fall 9-0.  Focusing on improvement and going back to the basics, the Pioneers play better in the last matches for seniors Peter Ray and Andrew Davy.

Although no victories came from the doubles flights, the Pioneers were excited about their much better showing against the Pirates on home court.  It was the best team effort up and down the doubles lineup against a top tier Northwest Conference opponent for the Pios this year.  Fellow Coloradoans, Peter Ray and Quinn Roth-Carter brought their big serves to the table in a match that saw big hitting and aggressive play.  In the end though, it was Joe Wales and Cameron Williams who would come out on top 8-5.  Japanese exchange students, Junya Furukawa and Wataru Nakamura, also playing their last match as Pios came within a break of evening the match with Colin Zalewski and Ben Hamming but were ousted 8-6 in the closest doubles match.  Freshmen, Kerry White and Cole Pfeiffer, who stand to play a big part in the Pios’ future, also lost a close match 8-5.  Coach Tilmanis was excited about the way his players stepped up to the challenge from a team that easily handled them the first time around.  “Our guys came out and really competed well today,” he said.  Singles action saw less favorable results, but senior Peter Ray continued to show glimpses of what he is capable of.  Improving after a more decisive loss earlier in the season to Shelton, Ray went out blazing and lost a hard fought battle 6-4, 6-2 to close out his Pioneer career.
