Women Lose Another Heartbreaker Against Whitman
RESULTS

PORTLAND, ORE-
It was another close one for the Pioneer women at the tennis dome
on Friday against conference opponent Whitman. The two evenly
matched teams fought for every point, but Whitman edged the Pios in
a 5-4 victory.
Doubles action was as close and competitive as it could be today in
the tennis dome. In the match with the largest margin of victory,
Lisa Harunaga and Isabelle Borris squeezed out a close 8-6 win at
#2 doubles. Both of the remaining two doubles matches ended in tie
breaks. At #1, Amalia Nilsson and her partner Whitney Debree won by
the slimmest of margins with a score of 9-8 (8-6). At the #3 spot
it was a back and forth match but the Whitman duo of Hadley Debree
and Kate Kunkel-Patterson pulled out the win, beating Jill Coleman
and Maggie Peach 9-8 (7-5). With the Pioneers leading 2-1 the stage
was set for an exciting night of competition. Singles began with
two dominant performances at #1 and #3. At #1, Amalia Nilsson
topped a powerful opponent in Alyssa Roberg with a 6-3, 6-1 score.
Playing against her sister, Whitney Debree played a solid and
consistent game to come out on top 6-3, 6-0. Going into the second
round of singles play the Pios only needed one more win to clinch a
victory. Unfortunately, Whitman rallied and completed an impressive
comeback, winning the last three singles matches. The closest of
the three came at #5 where Jill Coleman was defeated by Emily
Rolston 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Coach Moller commented that, “This match was reminiscent of
last week’s 5-4 loss to Willamette. We started ahead 2-1, but
we couldn’t manage to close out the victory in singles
play.” The women have a doubleheader in the tennis dome
tomorrow. They face Whitworth at 10 A.M. and division 1 opponent
Portland State at 4 P.M.
