HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Junior Raed Attia didn't waste any time in Lewis & Clark's season debut last Saturday, winning both his singles and doubles matches to earn Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.
In the Pioneers' 9-0 defeat of Puget Sound in a non-Northwest Conference match, Attia teamed with Jackson Powell for an 8-1 win over Joshua Wah-Blumberg and Lowell Hutton. Attia and Powell were one of two doubles teams to yield one game or fewer, joining teammates Ramez Attia and Keane Hindle in third position.
Raed Attia later won his No. 2 singles match, taking the first game 6-0 before wrapping up the match with a 6-4 win in set two. Attia was one of five singles competitors to win at least one set without giving up a game.
Last season, Attia played primarily as the team's No. 1 and went 7-12 overall with a 5-5 mark in NWC matches.
As a team, the Pioneers went 14-5 last season and earned the No. 2 seed in the NWC Championship tournament. Last fall, Gordon Barrows and Brenden Barrows reached the doubles championship match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championships. The pair is now ranked 23rd in the Oracle/ITA national rankings.
Lewis & Clark plays three nationally-ranked teams this weekend, Trinity, Redlands and Whitman, in Walla Walla, Wash.
