Powell gives Pios third-straight weekly NWC tennis honors

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers tennis teams continued their hot starts last weekend with the men's team getting a pair of dual victories including in the Northwest Conference opener against Willamette. As a result, sophomore Jackson Powell was selected NWC Student-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, giving Lewis & Clark three consecutive weekly winners this spring.

Powell won the highest singles match in Saturday's 8-1 defeat of the Caltech Beavers. Playing at No. 2, Powell defeated Zixiao Li, 6-2, 6-0, and paired with Pim Trouerbach for a second-position doubles victory. The pair was the only for the Pioneers to not give up a point in an 8-0 defeat of Derik Nguyen and Zixiao Li.

On Sunday against Willamette, Powell and Trouerbach won the top doubles match, 8-2, over Aaron Schechter and Colin Fisher.

The wins move Powell to 6-1 in singles and 4-3 in doubles for the entire 2017-18 season. He has not lost a singles dual match at 4-0 and is in the middle of a four-game winning streak.

In the NWC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Pioneers were predicted to finish second in the conference. Lewis & Clark hosts NWC favorite and defending champion Whitman on Mar. 9 in the only meeting of the regular season. In last season's regular-season matchup, Powell paired with graduated senior Ben DeLuca for a 9-8 loss in doubles.

Earlier this month, Powell's teammate Raed Attia was selected. Last week, women's senior Christine Eliazo was picked.

The Lewis & Clark men play at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran this weekend.
