Jessica Mullins Honored With Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award
PORTLAND, Ore. - Lewis & Clark softball player Jessica Mullins was honored with a spot on the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards for the 2010 season. Mullins was one of 12 softball players named to the award list.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. sports scholar awards were established to honor undergraduates of color who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field of competition. The award is inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashes Jr.'s commitment to education and his love for tennis. In order for students to be considered, they must compete in an intercollegiate sport and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.2, while having an impact on their campus and/or community.
Mullins graduated from Lewis & Clark in May of this year with a 3.55 cumulative grade point average and a 3.85 GPA in the fall of 2009. Mullins was the Pioneers star on the diamond, leading the team in home runs this last season with five, while playing in and starting every game for the Pios.
Mullins is the only athlete, female or male, from a Northwest Conference (NWC) school honored on the list of honorees. The Northwest Conference is comprised of: George Fox University, Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, Pacific (Ore.) University, Pacific Lutheran University, University of Puget Sound, Whitman College, Whitworth University and Willamette University
