Portland, Ore- With just the 400 Freestyle Relay left to swim and the meet on the line the Pioneer Women managed to come up with the three point win over Linfield Friday night.  It took eight swimmers to do it as the Pios relied on their 2nd and 3rd place relay teams to blunt the speed of Linfield's top freestyle racers.  The Pios scored 104 to Linfield's 101, also winning six individual events and the 400 Medley relay in the process.

Cat Menkel-Lawrence, Rachael Cazden, and Claire Jordan had big nights for the Pioneers, each going home with two individual wins.  Jordan stayed focused on the distance races starting the night out with a win in the 1000 Freestyle and following it up with a 7-second win in the 500 Freestyle.  Menkel-Lawrence and Cazden started the night with a win in the 400 Medley Relay along with Gail Wilcoxen and Susie Trexler.  Menkel-Lawrence followed that up with the 200 IM and the 200 Backstroke, while Cazden kept going with her string of sprint victories this year with wins in the 100 and 50 Freestyle.

The Men's squad managed to grab the 400 Freestyle Relay win to close their home season but were unable to overcome Linfield, going 86 to the Wildcats 111.  The Pioneers had some good performances leading up the conference meet, however, with Steven Carreno taking the 200 Freestyle and Josh Spegman grabbing a close race to take the 200 Backstroke.

Head Coach Chris Fantz summed up his thoughts after the meet; “This was a huge team meet for us on both sides. Our men kept the competition close and our women needed every single person to come together for this great win.”

“We are a strong, excited team going into the Conference meet in two weeks and I can’t be happier with our last home meet of the season. Our seniors got a great sendoff from their teammates and the fans.”

The Pioneers are next in action at the Northwest Conference Meet, held February 12th-14th in Federal Way, Washington.
