Salem, ORE-- Fresh on the heels of their victory over Linfield Friday the Pioneer Women kept their momentum going, taking the opening race of their Saturday afternoon meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay. They would keep that momentum all afternoon, taking nine of eleven races to control the meet against Willamette 140-65.
The Pioneer Men showed their grit with a hard fought meet, with wins in six races including the 400 Medley Relay, but despite keeping Willamette under pressure all afternoon the Bearcats squeaked out a win scoring 101 to the Pioneers 97.
The Pioneer Women's win in the 400 Medley was due to the talents of Sofia Koutzukis, Heather Markham, Gail Wilcoxen, and Monica Castro. Next up for the Pioneers would be Lesley Pfeiffer and Taylor Coiner, who went a strong 1-2 in the 1000 Freestyle. Koutzukis and Markham returned to the pool for the 200 Freestyle, taking 1st and 3rd respectively in that race. Rachael Cazden and Hannah Frank took the first two places in the 50 Freestyle, with Frank returning to the pool later in the evening to take the top step for the 100 Freestyle followed by teammate Koutzukis. Castro took the win in the 200 Butterfly, before Cazden returned to the pool to take her second win of the afternoon in the 200 Backstroke just ahead of teammate Ali Brauer. Pfeiffer returned to the pool to take her second distance win in the 500 Freestyle followed by teammate Castro. The women's team finished the meet with another solid relay win, this time by nearly eleven seconds the 400 Freestyle Relay courtesy of Coiner, Frank, Wilcoxen, and Cazden.
The Pioneer Men also opened the meet with a relay win in the 400 Medley, with River Poze, Tyler Moody, Seth Anderson, and Josh Spegman swimming the legs of that race. Trevor Schapiro was back to business in the 1000 Freestyle, taking the win by 24 seconds over the Willamette swimmer. In the 200 Individual Medley it was Moody back in action for a solid win of almost seven seconds, and in the 200 Butterfly Schapiro and Anderson teamed up for strong 1-2 finish. Not to be outdone, teammates Poze and Spegman also scored a 1-2 finish in the 200 Backstroke. Moody claimed his third race of the night with a win in the 200 Breastroke. Leading the meet into the final race, the Pioneers were unfortunately not able to overcome Willmette in the 400 Freestyle relay.
Back in classes Tuesday, the Pioneers return to Zhentbauer Pool Saturday the 26th for their final conference meet against Pacific, with racing scheduled to start at 1 PM.
