Women's Tennis Nearly Topples Top-Ranked Team

The Pioneer men's tennis team fell 8-1 to the Linfield Wildcats Friday evening in the tennis dome. The Pioneer women battled the Wildcats in McMinnville Friday, nearly defeating the top-ranked Wildcats on their home courts.

In the men's match, the men fell 8-1 (results) to the Linfield Wildcats. Luke Wheeler and Adam Rager teamed up for an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles. George Allen played a tough match at #1 singles, taking the first set 6-2 before falling 6-3, 6-1 in the final two. Luke Wheeler also battled at #2, falling 7-5, 7-5.

The women fell 5-4 (results) in McMinnville. The Wildcats have won 85 straight Conference matches, a streak that was in serious jeopardy Friday night. The Pioneers were down 2-1 going into the singles competitions, but victories at #1 (Amalia Nilsson, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2)), #2 (Lisa Harunaga 6-3, 6-1) and Whitney Debree (6-4, 6-2) put the Pioneers up 4-2.

After dropping four and five singles to the Wildcats, the match was tied 4-4, with the outcome resting on the results of the final singles match at #5. After Maggie Peach dropped the first set 7-5, she rallied to win the second 7-6 (7-5), but Linfield's Sarah Watanabe pulled out a 6-4 victory to keep the Wildcat win streak alive. It was the Pioneers their first loss in Conference play this season.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday morning, with the men in Salem taking on the Willamette Bearcats. The women are at home in the Dome hosting the Bearcats. The home matches begin at 10 am.
