SPOKANE, Wash. - The #6 Women's Basketball team hit the road for the weekend, starting off Northwest Conference play against the Whtiworth Pirates. The Pirates started off with a large first half lead, however the Pioneers cut the lead in the second half but were unable to pull out the win, falling 53-52.
The loss is the Pioneers second of the season, knocking them to 18-2 on the season and 9-2 in conference play. The Pirates improve to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in the NWC.
Kristina Williams led the Pioneers with 18 points, while collecting a team high eight rebounds. Katie Anderson knocked down 14 points off the bench for the Pios. Junior Tayler Wang collected eight boards for the Pios, whle Anderson collected five.
Emily Travis led the way for the Pirates with a game-high 19 points. KC McConnell led all players with a game-high 14 rebounds.
After falling behind early in the first half, the Pioneers tied the game with a Williams free-throw with 16:38 to play. Travis nailed a three pointer second later to recapture the Pirates lead, which Whitworth would hold throughout the remainder of the half.
Whitworth remained in control of the game throughout the first half of the second period. Williams pulled the Pioneers within a point after a quick jumper with 8:45 to go in the game. The Pirates recaptured a large lead, jumping to a 51-44 advantage with a little under two minutes remaining.
For the first time since the opening minutes of the first half, the Pioneers captured the lead, this time with back-to-back free-throws from Anderson. After a quick timeout, the Pirates inbounded the ball with nine seconds left, down one, and went straight down the court to lay one in for the one point victory.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. against Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash.
