The Whitman Missionaries move on to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament after taking down Cal Lutheran 61-37 on Friday night in the Pamplin Sports Center. The Missionares will take on the winner of the Lewis & Clark/Trinity game on Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m.
Heather Johns hit the first basket of the contest for the Missionaries and they never looked back. Whtiman held the lead the entire first half, led by 12 points from Tiffani Traver and 11 from Johns.
Johns laid one in with 12:52 to play increasing the Missionaries lead to double-digits, making it an 18-8 contest. A jumper by Johns with 1:31 to go until halftime put Whtiman up 33-18 heading into the locker room.
Cal Lutheran scored 10 of its 18 first half points from the free-throw line, with Jazmyne Porter draining 5-of-6. Neither team shot particularly well from the floor in the first half, with Whitman shooting 43.8% to Cal Lutheran's 1.4%.
The Missionaries never relinquished control of the scoreboard in the second half, keeping the Regals at a double-digit deficit the whole way. The Missionaries largest lead of contest came with 1:24 to go after back-to-back free-throws from Johns.
Traver led all players with 17 points, while Johns finished with 13 for Whitman. Sarah Anderegg finished with 12 points for the Missionaries, while Meghan White led all players with 12 rebounds.
Porter led the Regals with 12 points. Channing Fleischmann and Keeley Anderson led Cal Lutheran with five boards.
