SPOKANE, Wash. -The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team ended its Northwest Conference road trip on Saturday night with a match-up against Whitworth. The Pirates pulled out a 90-62 victory over the visiting Pioneers.
The Pioneers move to 9-8 on the season and 4-4 in NWC play. Whitworth improves to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in conference action.
Seniors Tayler Wang, Katie Anderson and Daron Dean all finished in double digits for the Pioneers. Wang led the way with 13 points, while Anderson scored 12 and Dean knocked down 10. Wang and freshman Ayisat Afolabi finished with a team-high seven rebounds, while Dean and Casey Zinn each collected five.
Kayla Johnson was the games leading scorer with 20 points, while teammate Kendra Lahue finished with 16.
The Pioneers opened the game on a 12-4 run that lasted four minutes, with Wang, Dean and Anderson teaming up for 10 of the 12 points. Sarah Anderson gave the Pios their largest lead of the half with a three-pointer at the 12:46 mark that made it a 22-10 game.
With the Pioneers appearing to be in control, the Pirates fought their way back into the half, tying the game on three occasions in the final five minutes. With the game tied at 34-34 with 1:18 on the clock, the Pirates sank a jumper and a free-throw to take a three point advantage into the half.
Whitworth started the second half strong eventually pulling out the win.
Lewis & Clark comes home for its next contest, hosting Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. for the second half of NWC play.
