PORTLAND, Ore. -- With their first home win since Jan. 2015, Lewis & Clark defeated the Northwest Eagles, 52-50, on Friday night at Pamplin Sports Center. Lauren Wood and senior Ayisat Afolabi each grabbed 14 points and combined for a total of 16 rebounds. Afolabi earned her second consecutive double-double of the season, with a season-high 12 rebounds.
"Ayisat brings so much energy to the court with her rebounds and put-backs," said Wood, a junior forward. "Miyah [Leith], with her drives, she really got us out of the rut."
Junior guard Miyah Leith distributed the ball from the top for the Pioneers (1-1), setting up sophomore Sara Hogman for a season-high seven points, and giving Wood the ball at the post for several clutch layups. The Pioneers also scored 16 points off of fast breaks, posting 12 steals. Janessa Willie came off the bench for Lewis & Clark, scoring five points, as did starter Sarah Anderson.
"We trust each other," Wood recounted. "We're looking to the post and looking for the kicks."
The trust paid off, as Leith's pass to Afolabi for a last-minute score gave the Pioneers the 2-point lead to end the game. Afolabi also ended the game with game-highs in blocks and steals, with three and four, respectively. Lewis & Clark also went 75 percent on free throws for the night, going 9-12.
The Eagles were 8-14 on field goals, and out-rebounded the Pioneers, 47-45. Hannah Carleson had a team-high 14 points. Northwest (3-4) bested Lewis & Clark in blocks and assists as well.
This is the first win for the Pioneers this season. The last time Lewis & Clark won in Pamplin Sports Center was over Willamette, 65-58, in Jan. 2015, and is also the first home win for head coach Pamela Findlay, who is in her rookie season with the Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark returns to the court on Saturday at Evergreen State at 5:30 p.m.
