SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior forward Annelise Coxeff netted her third goal of the season on Saturday, helping guide the Lewis & Clark women's soccer team past Whitworth 1-0 in Northwest Conference action.
The Pioneers improve to a perfect 2-0 in conference play and 4-1-1 on the season. Whitworth falls to 1-4-1 on the season and 0-2 in the NWC.
Despite having an 8-3 edge in shots in the first half, the Pirates could not find a way to put the ball past the Pioneer defense and goalkeeper Geena Fong. With the win, Fong picked up her four complete game win of the season.
The Pioneers got on the board in the 59th minute of action on a play that developed out of its defense with sophomore Mackenzie Cornell-Maier. After collecting the ball, Cornell-Maier played the ball down the line to junior Emily Thompson who ran it down before crossing it into the box. The Thompson low cross was perfectly placed at the feet of Coxeff who lightly tapped the ball past the Pirate keeper.
Coxeff and Kylie Carera each finished the game with three shots for the Pioneers, while Thompson had two. Fong ended the contest with six saves in 90 minutes for the Pios.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m. against Whitman.
