WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Two goals by the Whitman Blues in 40 seconds hindered the Lewis & Clark Pioneers' chances in a 4-2 loss to open the Northwest Conference season on Saturday at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Courtney Schmidt scored her first collegiate goal for the Pios in the game's 19th minute to put Lewis & Clark ahead. In the second half, with the Pioneers trailing 3-1, Kennie Beighle scored her second goal of the season to bring Lewis & Clark back within one.
Renee van Bergeijk and Susanna Williams scored the pair of goals in the less-than-a-minute span, with van Bergeijk's coming from a penalty kick, to help Whitman distance itself.
The teams were nearly even in all categories, with the Blues holding a slight advantage, 4-2, in saves. Allie Seracuse (1-3-0) earned her first win of the season in goal, saving two shots against four on-goal attempts by the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark's Megan Sawyer dropped to 0-2-1 in net after saving four of eight shots.
Schmidt scored her goal on an assist from McKenzie Wingard, whose initial shot was saved by Seracuse before Schmidt handled the rebound for the score.
In addition to her goal, Beighle led the Pios with two shots.
Lewis & Clark finishes the weekend with a 12 p.m. match at Whitworth on Saturday before returning home to host Puget Sound on Sept. 23.
