Boxer Kickoff Day II

The Pioneers cruised to a 30-14, 30-7, 30-17 victory over the Baruch Bearcats in the Sunday morning's first match. Kelsey Neussl's nine service aces broke her previous school record. The Pioneers wrapped up the tournament with a 30-27, 30-26, 30-24 loss to Cal State East Bay. Freshman Katherine Fiedler had a match-high 16 kills in the finale.

The morning match, which pitted the Pioneers against the CUNY Conference's Baruch Bearcats, began with a competitive start. In game one, the Pioneers jumped out to an 8-0 start in game one and never really looked back. They ended on an equally-dominant run, scoring the final ten straight points, including three straight service aces by Katherine Fiedler (freshman, San Diego, Calif.) Game two was all Pioneers and all Pioneer serving. Kelsey Neussl (junior, Kodiak, Alaska) began serving with the Pioneers leading 4-1. Seven service aces and two other points later, the Pioneers were well in control with a 12-2 lead. They held Baruch to just five more points in the game, closing out with a 30-7 final score. The third game began with a competitive start. With the teams tied 7-7, the Pioneers scored five straight, including a pair of service aces by Lara Smith (senior, Vashon Island, Wash.) to begin building a comfortable cushion. The continued to build a lead, closing the game and the match with a pair of kills by Sara Kettler (senior, Dana Point, Calif.) for the 30-17 victory.

The Pioneers logged 12 of their 20 aces in the match in game two. The 20 service aces in the match was the second highest single-match total for the Pioneers, with 29 being the school record. Neussl had nine total aces in the match, setting a school record. Neussl was one of three Pioneers to have eight aces in a match, a feat she accomplished last year in a home match against Willamette.

Sara Kettler continued her dominant hitting, with 8 kills in 13 attacks. Katherine Fiedler was a perfect 3-3 in attacking. Newcomer Molly Donahue (freshman, Lake Forest Park, Wash.) paced the defense with 12 digs. Lara Smith was looking much more comfortable in her new role as setter, logging 27 assists.

In the 6pm game, the L&C Pioneers fell 30-27, 30-26, 30-24 to the hard-hitting Cal State East Bay Pioneers. The two Pioneers battled through the first game, with the two teams tied 18-18 before East Bay edged out to an advantage. L&C, trailing 27-23, got a kill from Nicki Smith (senior, Brea, Calif.) to start a rally. A huge hit by Katherine Fiedler pulled L&C within one, 27-26, but East Bay called upon their outside hitter to close out the game and earn a 30-27 victory. The sharpness L&C showed in the first game seemed to fade in game two as East Bay jumped out to a 21-10 lead. The Pioneers regrouped and started to rally, pulling off a five point run and a six point run to make it a 27-20 game. Facing game point at 29-22, the Pioneers pulled off their most impressive rally, working hard to score six straight points, to pull within three, 29-26 on a huge kill by Sara Kettler. East Bay finally got a kill to earn the side out and sneak away with a 30-26 game win. In game three, it was L&C that took the early lead, scoring four straight points to start the game, extending the lead to six, 19-13, on an ace by Cayley Rasmussen (freshman, San Diego, Calif.). East Bay scored eight straight points to take a 20-19 lead. The L&C Pioneers seemed to run out of steam, scoring just five more points as the East Bay Pioneers walked away with a 30-24 game win and the match victory.

Katherine Fiedler led all players with 16 kills. Fiedler also had a solo block and a block-assist. Kelsey Neussl had 11 kills and another three aces. Cayley Rasmussen had 8 kills and 19 digs.

Katherine Fiedler was the Pioneers' leading scorer in the tournament. Fielder had 33 kills, 7 aces, five solo blocks, and eight block-assists in the four games. Nicki Smith had 29 kills. Cayley Rasmussen and Sara Kettler each had 26.

The Pioneers take Memorial Day off before returning to action, taking on Corban College Tuesday night at the Pamplin Sports Center. Game starts at 7pm.
