Diving in to a tough doubleheader

WHITEWATER, Wisc.-- The Lewis & Clark Women's volleyball team had a tough double header this Friday and they started off the UW-Whitewater Invitational playing the hosts of the tournament. The No. 14 Wis-Whitewaters. The Pioneers started off strong in the first set staying right on the heels of the Whitewaters only losing 21-25. The Whitewater's then started to pull ahead as they took the next two sets winning the second 16-25 and the third 13-25. This resulted in a win for UW-Whitewater with a score of (3) and the Lewis and Clark Pioneers (0).

The Pioneers ended the match with a hitting percentage of .120 with Casey Myszkowski having a team high hitting percentage of .308.

Mikayla Lopez (15 AST) and Sam Yorke (7 AST) ended the match with a total of 22 assists combined while Kortney Meyer (6 K), Emma Contreras (8 K)  and Casey Myszkowski (5 K) combined for 19 kills total.

In the second game of the afternoon, Lewis & Clark brought the match back to a 5th set after Luther took the first two sets. During the first and second set, both teams were neck and neck. The first set ended with a score of 19-25 and the 2nd ended 22-25.

The third and fourth set is when the Pioneers made their run. In the middle of the 3rd set, the pioneers started to pull away which made Luther call a timeout with the Pioneers up 23-17. Mikayla Lopez served an ace to put the Pioneers up 24-17. The Norse then hit the ball out to give the Pioneers the win with a score of 25-18..t

The 4th set started off strong for the pioneers! Luther had to take a timeout when the score was 12-8 since the Pioneers were starting to pull away. However, Luther came back strong after the timeout and took the lead 16-14 after two quick runs. The Pios then called a timeout to regroup. Tied at 20-20 and the Norse got a kill to take the lead. Then, Kortney Meyer answered back with a tip over the block to tie the score up again. Emma Contreras tooled the block to take the lead 22-21 and Kortney Meyer gave the team a major advantage getting a service ace to give the Pioneers a 23-21 lead forcing the Norse to call a timeout. The Norse came back to tie the set at 23-23 with a service error by the Pioneers and a Norse service ace. Lewis & Clark was finally able to with the set from Annika San Nicolas passing the ball to Mikayla Lopez who then set a slide to Casey Myszkowski which got the kill ending the 4th set with a score of 25-23 taking them to a 5th set. In the 5th set, the Pioneers lost 3-15 due to the Luther's efficient attacks.

The Pioneers overall team hitting percentage was .139 while Luther had a .222. Casey Myszkowski had the team high hitting percentage for the second time this afternoon with a .400. Kortney Meyer had a team high 20 kills in the match and Myszkowski (12 K) and Meyer (20 K) ended the match with a combined 32 kills.

Annika San Nicolas and Hannah Robles both had season highs this afternoon. San Nicolas had 20 digs and Robles had 21 digs. Both combined for more than two thirds of the team's total digs this match.

Mikayla Lopez ended the afternoon with a team high 32 assists and second highest kill percentage .364.

The Pioneers will play again Saturday morning in Whitewater against Augustana at 8:00 a.m.
