Tough start for the Pioneers first game in Washington

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Pioneers started off their washington weekend playing the Whitworth Pirates this Friday night. The Pioneers lost with scores of 25-11, 25-23, 25-18.

Lewis & Clark had a rough first set to start off the match but started it off with four kills by three different Pioneers to get the Pios within one. Whitworth had that one point lead with a score of 8-7 but was able to pull ahead to 16-7 lead with two service aces and errors by the Pios. Kortney Meyer was the Pioneers offense in the first set finishing it with three kills.

The Pioneers put Whitworth on their heels in the second set coming back from a 19-9 10-point deficit, and finishing two points behind the Pirates. Anneke Banda started the comeback run with a kill of her own and then Meyer's followed that up with two service aces. Sam Yorke also had a kill along with two kills by Makena Ohlmaier bringing the score to 20-16. Annika San Nicolas and Hannah Robles then both had one service ace each bringing the score to 21-20. Casey Myszkowski was able to hit two more kills for the Pioneers counteracting their own errors bringing the score to 24-23 but Whitworth finally took the second set off of a kill by Cara Wonsley. The Pioneers had a total of five service aces and 12 kills in the second set to almost steal the second set from the Pirates.

Both the Pioneers and the Pirates started off the third set with multiple kills from different players. The Pirates were able to extend their two point lead to an eight point lead (12-20) from two kills by Corinne Bell and attack errors by Lewis & Clark. Ohlmaier brought the Pios back within five from two service aces and a kill but the Pirates finished the set by a kill from Emiko Kahler.

The Pioneers finished the match with 28 kills and seven service aces. Myszkowski and Meyer shared the team-high in kills with six each and Banda had the team-high hitting percentage with a .273. Meyer also had the team-high in service aces with three. Mikayla Lopez finished the match with 13 assists and San Nicolas had 12 digs. This loss is the Pioneers sixth straight.

Lewis & Clark will be travelling to Whitman this Saturday and will begin play at 5 p.m.
