2007 NCAA III Cross Country West Region Championships

Amanda Phillips and Tamma Carleton punched their tickets to the
NCAA III National Cross Country Championships with their finishes
at the West Regional on Saturday. David Berman earned All-Region

The race, held on the Pioneers home course, McIver State Park in Estacada, Ore., ended up taking place under almost ideal conditions with slightly damp grounds, but no rain. Amanda Phillips (senior, Phoenix, Ore.) finished fourth overall with a mark of 21:42.85. Phillips was a second behind Puget Sound's Kenna Patrick for third and two seconds behind second-place Maddie Coffman of Willamette. Willamette's Sarah Zerzan, the reigning National Champion, won her third-straight regional with a time of 20:51.65. Tamma Carleton (junior, Elk, Calif.) will be making her third trip to Nationals. Carleton finished eighth in the field of 114 runners with a mark of 22:07.05. The Regionals send two teams and the top-seven individuals not on those two teams to the National Championships. Willamette and Puget Sound finished 1-2 in the team rankings, with Phillips the top runner not on either team. Carleton was fourth among the seven individuals to earn berths.
Kitty Smith (junior, Malibu, Calif.) finished 39th with a time of 23:43.15. Kelsey Croall (freshman, Newcastle, Calif.) was 65th with a 24:16.55. Hannah Hultine (senior, Tualatin, Ore.) was 73rd with a 24:30.00. Rachel Kroencke (junior, Madison, Wisc.) was 98th with a 26:08.55. Andrea Porter-Smith (freshman, Seattle, Wash.) was 100th with a 26:39.05. The team finished fifth (among 16 teams) with 169 points, edging Occidental by just two points. They were fourth among NWC schools.
For the men, David Berman (junior, Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished 33rd
overall with a time of 26:39.85. The top-35 runners earned All-West
Region Honors. This is the first All-Region designation for Berman.
The men's team finished 10th out of 13 teams with 246 points. The
George Fox Bruins edged just past the Pioneers, finishing ninth
with 243 points. Other Pioneer individual finishes were Karl
Dickman (sophomore, Bend, Ore.), 46th, 26:57.70; Jeff Carman
(junior, Elmira, Ore.), 49th, 26:59.55; Richie LeDonne (freshman,
Narbath, Penn.), 53rd, 27:07.05; Paul Mandsager (senior, Anchorage,
Alaska), 70th, 27:43.50; Zach Yeager (sophomore, Chico, Calif.),
76th, 28:03,95; Leif Bullock (senior, La Grande, Ore.), 78th,
28:21.60.
