PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark cross country team beat the Linfield Wildcats 49-65 on Friday in a dual meet at Westmoreland Park. The Pioneer women won 18-39, while in a tightly contested men's race, the Wildcats pulled out a 26-31 victory.
On the women's side, senior Emily Thomas finished first overall with a time of 22:48.1. Senior Heather Spurling placed second, close behind Thomas with a time of 23:14.8. Juniors Melissa Newton-Mora and Emily Fagan also finished in the top five.
"The women opened the season with another outstanding performance. The team showed their depth and competitiveness by taking five of the top six places and nine of the top 13," said head coach Keith Woodard. "It was a nice way to get the season under way and get us focused for the fast field and course at Sundodger [Invitational] in two weeks."
For the men's team, senior Sam Smith was the first Lewis & Clark finisher, in third place with a time of 27:12.5. Junior Jarrod Nixon also finished in the top five for the Pioneers, with a time of 28:09.7.
"Overall it was a good day at the races for us. The team is still in the middle of heavy early season training and competed hard," said Woodard. "We should be able to build off of this performance as we get ready for Sundodger."
The Pioneers return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
