PALATINE HILL -- Over 55 Lewis & Clark student-athletes qualified for the recently released Lewis & Clark College Spring 2017 Dean's List.

Director of Student-Athlete Development Dr. Kayleigh McCauley said that all 19 of Lewis & Clark's varsity athletics programs were represented, 18 of which had a team grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Overall, Lewis & Clark intercollegiate teams averaged a 3.20 GPA.

"I'm so impressed to see how well our student-athletes are performing in the classroom," said McCauley, who added the overall team GPA is the highest she's seen since joining the staff prior to the 2014-15 academic year. "Lewis & Clark student-athletes are demonstrating how to truly become champions in the classroom."

Among the student-athletes on the list, 18 had 4.00 GPAs, led by men's swimming and women's track and field, each of which had three. At April's Excellence in Lewis & Clark's Year of Sports awards (the ELCYS), women's swimming won the ChamPIOns Team Award. The team earned the award, in part, because of having the highest yearlong GPA. Women's swimming had seven student-athletes qualify for the Spring 2017 Dean's List, the most of any program.

Men's track and field had the highest Spring 2017 GPA of any men's team.

Lewis & Clark's Building ChamPIOns philosophy focuses on helping student-athletes become champions in the classroom, competition, character and community through varsity athletics. As part of that effort, McCauley provides full-time student-athlete support, making Lewis & Clark one of 27 NCAA Division III institutions with a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) on staff. There are 450 institutions in NCAA Div. III.

At the 144th Annual Commencement Ceremony earlier this month, over 50 student-athletes received their diplomas and about 20 received extra recognition at the Lewis & Clark College Honors Convocation. Women's golf senior Arielle Valdez was selected the senior speaker for commencement.

Student-athletes who made the Spring 2017 Dean's List will be invited to a recognition ceremony during a Lewis & Clark football game next fall.
