Baseball Falls to Willamette Twice on Saturday

SALEM, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark baseball team dropped its series opening game at Willamette on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bearcats 8-2. Game two is set to begin around 3 p.m. 

Willamette scored three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to overcome a 2-1 deficit on its way to an 8-2 victory over visiting Pioneers in the first game of the Northwest Conference doubleheader. 

Rolenn Himuro of Willamette went 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Tiras Koon was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI. Hunter Gallant hit a single, scored a run and drove in a run, while earning eight assists on defense at third base.

EJ Hand and Michael Kinkenon each went 2 of 4 for L&C. Kinkenon had the Pioneers' only extra-base hit, a double.

WU starter Peter Hoffman tossed a complete game and improved to 3-0 on the season. He struck out five batters and allowed two walks, while throwing 130 pitches. L&C starter Ryan Strombom pitched seven innings, but fell to 0-6 after allowing seven runs (5 earned).

Willamette improved to 15-4 overall and to 8-4 in the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark dropped to 3-18 on the season, including 2-9 in the NWC.

For the Bearcats, Jordan Ramp went 3 for4 with two runs, three RBIs. He hit for three-fourths of the cycle with a single, a double and a two-run homer. Tiras Koon also hit a two-run homer on his way to going 2 for 4.

WU scored one run in the first and one in the third, before adding two in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. It was 5-0 before the Bearcats tacked on four runs in the eighth.

Starting pitcher Connor Loar of Willamette pitched seven inning and improved to 4-1 on the season. He earned seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits --- all singles -- and two walks. L&C starter John Trupin went 7 2/3 innings and fell to 0-3 after allowing nine runs (six earned).

The two sides end the series on Sunday, March 22 at 12 p.m.
