Pioneers' eighth inning rally not enough

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Ben Beck's single moved a runner to third before back-to-back walks by Pacific's Cody Ahigrimm scored two runs for Lewis & Clark, but the Pioneers weren't able to add anymore in an 8-6 defeat to the Boxers on Monday night at Ron Tonkin Field.

Trailing by three runs entering the eighth inning, the Pios drew four walks, eventually scoring two runs to move closer to completing a comeback from a 7-4 deficit. Nick Lockwood followed his inning-opening walk by advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Beck's single moved him to third, Conner Sick pinch hit for Max Haddad, getting walked to load the bases. Ahigrimm replaced Ryan Derdak and walked both Bradley Lezak and Cooper Larson to score runs for Lewis & Clark. A strike out by Matt Donovan between Lezak and Larson's walks, and a foul out by Sean Shepherd, ended the inning.

The Pioneers went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game, as Lewis & Clark finished 1-3 in the four-game season-opening tournament against Northwest Conference competition.

Shepherd and Connor Eggleston scored brought in runs in the top of the first to give the Pios a 2-0 lead. Shepherd smacked a two-out triple after Larson reached on a single, who scored. Eggleston sent a single into left field to bring in Shepherd.

Pacific (3-1) scored three runs in the opening inning off Lewis & Clark starter Austin Conniff. Joey Galeno singled to score a run before Shane Suyama was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. Mike Thomson grounded out to second base, scoring Walker Olis, who had walked earlier in the inning.

In his first career start, Conniff went 2 2-3 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, all earned, while walking four batters with one strikeout.

Donovan singled in a run for Lewis & Clark in the second inning to tie the game. Beck tried to follow Spencer Gutterman home, but was thrown out from right field.

With the game tied, Drake Gilliland relieved Conniff after Pacific recaptured the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the third. The Boxers added two more runs in the fourth.

Shepherd, who finished with two runs batted in, brought in Lezak to score the Pios a run in the fifth inning. Overall, Shepherd hit 2 for 5, while Larson walked twice to finish 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Eggleston and Donovan also had multiple hits and an RBI in the game, with Lezak finishing with a RBI as well.

Dylan Wright and Olis had multi-hit games for Pacific, while Joey Galeno brought in two runs.

Nate Montgomery earned the win for Pacific.

Lewis & Clark (1-3) plays its first home games on Sunday with a doubleheader against Whitman starting at noon.
