Lockwood hits a homer, but the Pios lose two at Whitworth

Game 2 - Whitworth 12, Lewis & Clark 4

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Nick Lockwood's sixth inning home run gave the Lewis & Clark Pioneers their first runs of the day, but it wasn't enough to help the Pios beat Whitworth in a 12-4 loss on Friday at Merkel Field.

Lockwood's homer, his second of the season, followed Connor Eggleston's single. Conner Sick had an RBI for the Pioneers as well. Along with Bradley Lezak, all three had two hits in the game.

The Pioneers weren't able to comeback after allowing nine runs over the first two innings, including seven in the first. Starter Nathan Klein left after 1 2/3 innings, having given up nine hits, four earned runs on two walks and a strikeout. As he had in the first game, Whitworth leadoff hitter Daniel Casanova hit a home run in his first at-bat, before JT Phelan and Garrett Hughes hit a homer and a double, respectively, to score runs in the opening inning. Casanova added another RBI on a single later in the inning. Phelan homered again in the second inning before Nate Lamberty's RBI single to right field prompted Klein (3-3) to leave the game.

Jeramy Albert replaced Klein and pitched the final 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs on a walk and a strikeout.

Lewis & Clark (11-17; 3-11 Northwest Conference) had runners in scoring position in every inning starting from the fourth, as the Pioneers totaled one fewer hit than Whitworth, 14, and both teams stranded nine runners.

Tommy Massari hit an RBI double down the left field line in the eighth inning, accounting for his one hit. Starters Akira Abderrahman, Sean Shepherd, Ryan Ericksen and Ben Beck all had a hit in the game, as did pinch hitters Jacob Burton and Christian Macdonald.

TJ Orchard improved to 4-0 as a starter for 10th-ranked Whitworth after pitching 6 1/3 innings. Jordan McGowan, Joel Condreay and Phelan had three hits each to lead the Pirates.

Game 1 - Whitworth 12, Lewis & Clark 0

The Pioneers got a 2 for 4 performance from freshman leftfielder Matt Donovan, but only found one more hit in a 12-0 defeat to the No. 10 Whitworth Pirates on Friday at Merkel Field.

Donovan (pictured right) hit an infield single in the first inning and a two-out single through the middle in the sixth to give the Pios two of their five baserunners in the game.

Whitworth starter Hugh Smith improved to 4-0 this season after allowing no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Christian Macdonald and Ben Beck earned walks off Smith.

Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark starting pitcher Aaron Landecker (2-4) gave up 14 hits and eight runs, including a leadoff home run by Daniel Casanova. The Pirates (19-4; 11-3 NWC) scored six runs in the second inning, eventually leading 8-0 through four innings.

Each team committed one error in the game.

Holden Jones and Zach Merzlak combined for four innings of relief, including Jones striking out the side in his one inning pitched. Merzlak allowed five hits and four runs after giving up four walks and posting one strikeout.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m.
