TACOMA, Wash. -- The Pioneers were able to defeat the Puget Sound Loggers this Sunday in their third face-off this weekend with scores of 11-6. This was their first conference win of the season after losing to the Loggers yesterday in their double-header match-up.
The Pioneers had a much more efficient start in today's game being the first team to score. At the top of the first Chandler Vieira hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home Matt Donovan and then advanced to second base off of the throw. The Pioneers then scored again at the top of the second after Jacob Serafini ran home unearned due to M. Donovan getting caught stealing making the score 2-0.
The Loggers earned their first run at the bottom of the second due to the help of one error by the Pioneers and four runs in the third from another two errors by Lewis & Clark.
With the score now 2-5, the Pioneers got three hits in at the top of the fourth and brought in another run. M. Donovan hit an RBI single to third base which brought in Ryan Ericksen but they left three runners on base making the score 3-5. The Pios then made the score 4-5 at the top of the fifth after Sean Shepherd hit a homerun into left field.
At the bottom of the fifth the Loggers brought in another run, 4-6, after getting two hits and both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning the M. Donovan hit a solo home run to make the game 5-6 and the Pios were able to stop the Loggers from scoring in the seventh and eighth inning.
With the Pioneers down one run and at the top of the ninth, Lewis & Clark was able to string a couple of key hits together to get Cooper Larson to third base. With R. Ericksen at the plate with two outs in the inning, he was able to hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home C. Larson to tie the game at 6-6. Lewis & Clark then stopped the Loggers from scoring sending the game into the tenth inning.
With all the momentum on the Pioneers side, Lewis & Clark was able to bring in five runs off of four RBI's. Joey Oda singled to left field to bring home Kevin Jacobs, Michael Contreras was hit by a pitch with bases loaded so J. Serafini came home. Cameron Paron grounded out but Oda was able to score and R. Ericksen singled to left field to bring home Shepherd.
"It was a true team win today…" said Head Coach Matt Kosderka "with so many different guys contributing. We got huge efforts on the mound from Yarak, Merzlak and Richman. Oda had a huge it to give us the lead. It's never easy to come off the bench, but he did a great job of being ready and executing what we needed him to do."
The Pioneers pitchers finished the game with five strikeouts and no home runs allowed. The team also finished with a total of 16 hits.
Lewis & Clark will be coming back home for the next two weekends playing Swarthmore first followed by Linfield. The Pioneers have a double-header on Sat March 10 at 11 a.m. then 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday March 11 at 12 p.m.
