HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Dominic Monozon pitched a nine-inning shutout against Pacific Lutheran on Saturday to give the Pioneers their first conference win and earn him Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Monozon allowed only six hits and did not walk a single batter in his first career shutout and first career win for the Pioneers. Monozon also matched his career-high in strikeouts, retiring seven of 32 batters faced. He now leads the Lewis & Clark pitching staff with 25 strikeouts on the season.
Monozon's has pitched the most innings of any Pioneer (37.2) and has the second-best earned run average with a 4.78. As a freshman Monozon pitched in 10 innings allowing 14 hits and 10 runs and finished the season with an 8.10 earned run average.
Monozon's shutout marks the Pioneers first conference win of the season and second shutout of a NWC opponent in the last two seasons. The Pioneers went on to win their next game to take the season series 2-1 against the Lutes. This is the first time the Pioneers have won the series against the Lutes since before 2007.
After last weekend the Pioneers improved to 4-15 on the season and 2-10 against conference opponents. The Pioneers continue conference play next weekend at home against Puget Sound with a doubleheader (12 p.m and 3 p.m.) on Saturday and the final game of the series starting at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
