Entering his second season in 2019, Matt Kosderka was named the 11th head coach of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in the summer of 2017 following nearly 15 years as a Portland-area high school head coach and assistant at Willamette of the Northwest Conference.
In his first season leading the program, the Pioneers were named the ChamPIOns Team of the Year at the 2018 ELCYS (Excellence in Lewis & Clark's Year in Sports) awards. To earn the award, a team must display exemplary character and sportsmanship in competition, in the classroom, on campus and in our community. Academically, Lewis & Clark was the only Northwest Conference program and one of 80 teams nationwide to receive the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Academic Excellence Award in 2018. During the spring season, the Pioneers defeated Linfield, the NWC runner-up, in a series for the first time in at least a decade. Statistically, the Pios were second in the NWC in stolen bases per game and earned two All-NWC selections in Sean Shepherd (first team) and Matt Donovan (second team). Donovan's 17 doubles led the conference and set a new school record for a single season.
In 2014, Kosderka joined the Willamette Bearcats, who were one year removed from a 14-win season. With Kosderka on the staff, Willamette posted four straight 20-win seasons including a 28-14 mark in 2017. The team jumped from 11 NWC wins in 2016 to 18 in 2017, finishing second in the conference.
Prior to his move into the collegiate ranks, Kosderka was the head coach at Wilsonville High School, which is located 15 miles south of Lewis & Clark's campus. Kosderka led the Wildcats to a 169-106 overall record, two league championships and a state runner-up finish in 2011. He was named Oregon School Activities Association Class 5A Coach of the Year that season.
Kosderka pitched for Willamette from 1995-98 and was selected NAIA First-Team All-America and NWC Player of the Year as a senior, after which he was drafted by the Texas Rangers. As of the date of his hire at Lewis & Clark, the Willamette Athletic Hall of Famer held Willamette career records with 30 wins and 350 1/3 innings pitched, ranked second all-time at the school in career appearances, complete games, starts and strikeouts and held the single-season records for strikeouts and innings pitched.
