Pioneers fall in non-conference matchup against Evergreen State

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Four Pioneers scored in double figures in a 92-81 loss to the Evergreen State Geoducks. Markel Leonard and Andrew Vickers netted 17 apiece while both Cannen Roberson and Kyle Owens added 16.

Leonard scored five of the first nine points for the Pioneers, helping the Pios pull ahead 9-7 early in the match.The next 10 minutes of the matchup proved to be an even playing field, before Lewis & Clark broke a 20-20 tie with nine unanswered points. Owens posted five of them, including a 3-pointer and two free throws, helping the Pios pull ahead with five minutes left in the period. 

The first half ended at a 37-37 tie, with Owens posting 11 of the points for Lewis & Clark. 

The Geoducks scored the first seven points of the second half, and the Pioneers slowly broke down Evergreens lead before Leonard sank three free throws to tie the score up again, 48-48. The game was back-and-forth for the next few minutes, until a jumper by Owens led the Pios to their last lead of the game. 

Lewis & Clark allowed their first double digit deficit with 5:09 left to play, and never won the lead back. 

The Pios shot 38 percent (24-for-63) from the field, and went 11-for-31 from beyond the three-point line. Jonathan Boddie had a game-high 11 rebounds while Cory Coombe led all players with six assists.

Taylor Drey was the leading scorer for Evergreen State, netting a game-high 29 points. Shawn Spencer ended the game with 19. 

The Pioneers return home to play at Pamplin Sports Center Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. versus Caltech.
