Pios challenge No. 5 Whitworth late in season-ending defeat

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Cory Coombe scored 15 points in the first half, but the Lewis & Clark Pioneers couldn't move ahead of the No. 5 Whitworth Pirates in an 83-74 loss on Saturday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

At the site of their 2015 Northwest Conference tournament championship defeat, the Pios were within two points after Alex Jones' 3-pointer with 3:37 to go. Whitworth outscored Lewis & Clark 12-5 down the stretch to close out the game.

Along with Coombe and Jones, Lewis & Clark senior Markel Leonard played in his final game. Fellow senior Cannen Roberson missed his second game in a row because of injury. Although the seniors were playing for the final time, freshman Nico Bricker had a team-high 21 points, one shy of his career high.

Skout Roberson did have a career-best performance on Saturday with 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Lewis & Clark shot 26 free throws, making 22. It was the Pios' best shooting performance from the line since hitting 92 percent on 16 attempts at Puget Sound on Jan. 7.

In addition to Cannen Roberson's injury, the Pioneers were also without freshmen Andrew Vickers and Zeke Crawford as well.

Kyle Roach led the Pirates with 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Whitworth (22-3; 13-3 NWC) shot 55 percent as a team on its senior night and will enter the NWC tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Lewis & Clark ends the season with a 9-16 overall record and a 6-10 mark in the NWC. Without earning a NWC tournament berth, it is the second-straight year the Pioneers won't be in the postseason tournament after seven consecutive appearances from 2008-15.
