Pioneers sit in sixth after first day of 10-team UT-Dallas Cup

ALLEN, Texas -- Robert Wang's 5-over-par 77 led the way for the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in the first round of the UT-Dallas Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Wang is in a tie for 13th place to help the Pioneers to a sixth-place position in the 10-team tournament at the Golf Club at Twin Creeks. 

"It was a bit of a struggle through the first five holes," said Wang, "but I was able to manage to keep my head high and push forward." 

Brett Peterson and Michael Bove are tied for 21st after a 6-over-par 78. 

There are 58 golfers competing. Although it is a non-conference event, Whitman, another Northwest Conference team is also in Texas. All but one of the Pios placed ahead of the Whitman golfers. Concordia of Texas is leading by two strokes over Mary-Hardin Baylor.

Senior Drew Groshong is tied for 44th with a 12-over-par 84. Jacob bell is ranked 53rd. 

"It's definitely a challenging course, with tough competition," said Wang. "However, the team will be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow morning." 

The team tees off as part of a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Central Time on Sunday.
