Groshong, Wang in fourth as Pios finish first round in fifth place

TACOMA, Wash. -- Drew Groshong and Robert Wang, competing in their last and first Northwest Conference Championship, respectively, are tied for fourth overall as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers finished Saturday's opening round in fifth place.

Groshong and Wang shot 5-over-par 77s at Tacoma Country Club. The pair trails leader Mitchell Baldridge of Pacific Lutheran by two strokes. PLU is up five strokes over Willamette and Whitworth for the team lead.

Michael Bove finished 7-over-par with a 79 in the freshman's first NWC Championship. Jacob Bell shot 43s on both sides to finish tied for 37th place with an 86. Chris Horton posted a 15-over-par 87.

Groshong birdied the first and 13th holes and had only one double bogey, on the par-5 11th. Like Groshong, Wang birdied the first hole and added two others on the sixth and 16th, while posting bogey on the eighth.

Play resumes at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
