RICHLAND/PASCO, Wash. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were unable to finish their opening rounds of the two-site Sunshine Invitational on Saturday. A frosty morning led to a late start and both the men's and women's teams were unable to finish before darkness.
For the men, their results of Saturday's unfinished first round came in but only the first nine holes were recorded. Jacob Bell and Spencer Long both finished with 39 strokes followed by Kade McCoy with 42 strokes. David Furman finished with 44 strokes with Nick Lombardi ending with 57 strokes. The men's team finished with an overall score of 164 at the end of the first round.
The Pioneer women were able to finish all 18 holes in their first round ending with a team total of 367 and three stokes behind Pacific Lutheran who was in third.
Jane Almeida was the top finisher for the Pios at the end of round one with an 83 followed by Annika Clunk with an 87. Tori Eichten ended with a 95 and Elizabeth Moretti with a 102.
Round two was more manageable for the golfers on the second day being able to complete all 18 holes. The Lewis & Clark women's team finished the invitational in the top three after passing Pacific Lutheran for third place. The Pioneers had a second round score of 344 and an overall score of 711 (+135 over par). The Pioneers men were in sixth place with a second round team score of 324 strokes and overall total score of 488 (+56 over par).
Jane Almeida had the best finish tying for fourth place after hitting a 77 in round two (160 overall). Annika Clunk tied for 10th place hitting an 81 (168 overall). Tori Eichten brought her stroke count down by a lot hitting an 84 in the second round (179 overall) and tying for 19th. Elizabeth Moretti had a mirror image performance hitting another 102 (204 overall) and tying for 34th.
Spencer Long was the top finisher for the Pioneers tying for 16th place, one stroke in front of Jacob Bell, finishing his second round in 77 strokes (116 overall). Bell ended with 78 strokes (117 overall) and tied for 21st place. David Furman and Kade McCoy were also one stroke a part with Furman hitting an 83 (127 overall) and placing 39, and McCoy an 86 (128 overall) placing 40th. Nick Lombardi finished his second round with 89 strokes a (146 overall) and placing 44th.
Pioneer Golf will be travelling to Corvalis, Ore to play in the Willamette Cup this weekend Mar. 17 & 18. The start time for the event is TBA.
