HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Helping the Pioneers to a 6-3 victory in the conference opener Raed Attia was victorious in both his singles and doubles matches to earn him the title of Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Attia, playing as the number one seed defeated Nathan Saragoza of Linfield 6-1, 7-5. Playing as the number one seed in doubles Attia, along with partner Ramez Attia, defeated Saragoza and Luis Rojas of Linfield 8-6. The Attias lost to Saragoza and Rojas in an earlier matchup this year but started conference play off right with a big point for the Pioneers. Attia is on a three-match winning streak in singles as the Pioneers number one seed and the doubles win this weekend is his second in a row after the Pioneers swept Willamette last weekend.
In the NWC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Pioneers were predicted to finish fourth, with Whitman predicted to finish on top. The Pioneers are currently ranked 27th nationally with Whitman currently ranked at 16th. George Fox, expected to finish second in the NWC is just behind the Pioneers in the national rankings at 28th.
The Pioneers are home this next weekend to take on Puget Sound on Saturday and Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. The next weekend the Pios will travel to Eastern Washington to take on Whitworth and nationally ranked Whitman.
